Macro moth

We saw this delightful little (about 15mm long) moth on our thyme bush today. I haven't identified it yet but I thought I'd share it with you.

I've just found out it's name is Pyrausta aurata.
For such a distinctive little moth it's surprising there's not a common name.

There's a really good search engine for identifying moths at http://ukmoths.org.uk/.

Also http://www.suffolkmothgroup.org.uk/index.shtml is worth a look with it's impressive gallery.

I like Custard Spot, but I've just been told it's common name is Mint Moth (thanks Paul G) because it likes eating mint.
