Some unseasonal rain and therefore wet roads had the whole cast and crew stranded in Karijini NP for an extra day - big shame! I got out and made the most of it.

The first Brolgas of the trip were encountered at Fitzroy Crossing. At the end of a hectic day of filming they almost looked as good as a cold tin of VB.

Whim Creek Hotel, WA

The Whim Creek Hotel might be the best pub in the world. Miles from anywhere, exactly halfway between Karratha and Port Headland, you'll need a good friend to drive you there and back. It's full of bar games, some unique, and is surrounded by an aviary. The surrounding wild birdlife was buzzing too. Here's what I captured in the spare five minutes we had between takes.

Spinifex Pigeon

The old port town of Cossack in WA hasn't really got much going on. It was, however, home to the largest finch flock we encountered along The Extraordinary Taxi Ride. It wasn't a mixed flock but an awesome sight and sound to see so many Zebra Finches all the same. A family of Spinifex Pigeons were also running around the local field of broken bottles. Is there nowhere a birdwatcher can't be happy?

Monkey Mia, WA.

Monkey Mia is the place to see Thick-billed Grasswrens. The car park there is a renowned, reliable spot and the only place this species, usually an interior bird, meets the coast. As luck would have it, we had a crew rest day so I got out and did some shooting of my own.

After hearing a few, it was also good to get a quick glimpse of a Chiming Wedgebill running around the semi-arid scrub.
